Prospect Heights Community Farm

The garden is located on Saint Marks Avenue between Vanderbilt and Underhill Avenues in the “Heart of Brooklyn.”   In the  mid- ’90’s, P.S. 9 teachers/ troop leaders and staff lead their Boy Scouts and worked with the Pastor & members from the local Baptist church to clear the site, planted trees and created an educational garden.  However, the Troop disbanded and church interest waned resulting in the greenspace being abandoned, save one sole gardener.

In 1997 gardening enthusiasts in the neighborhood organized, joined the lone remaining member and reinvigorated the garden, transforming the three adjoining lots into the vibrant and dynamic public garden you can see today.

By the late ‘90s, plans were revealed by the NYC Dept. of HPD to use the site as a staging area for a nearby housing development and then build on the garden site as well. Working with Community Board 8, gardeners convinced the City to release the garden to the Parks Department GreenThumb program.

In the early 2000′s, fearing that their future wasn’t secure, gardeners worked to get the three lots deeded to the Trust for Public Land.  Now, gardeners are working with other local gardens to create BANG LT.

The Farm has a dynamic membership active with a community composting program, a “water harvesting” project collecting rain water from the adjacent apartment building and various public events like the annual Pumpkin Smash Potato Bake Bash!!!
